How to Play 3Patti: Rules, Rankings and Real Table Strategy

Three cards, one pot, and a series of decisions about how much your hand is worth. Teen Patti is easy to learn in ten minutes and takes considerably longer to play well. This page covers the full rules, the variations you will meet in 3Patti Blue, and the strategy that separates a player who lasts an evening from one who is out in twenty minutes.

The basics

A standard 52-card deck, no jokers in the classic game. Three to six players. Everyone posts the boot — a fixed opening stake — and each player is dealt three cards face down. Betting runs clockwise until only one player remains, or two players go to a show and compare hands.

Blind and seen: the decision that shapes everything

A blind player has not looked at the cards and bets at half the current stake. A seen player has looked and bets at the full stake. The stake escalates as players raise, within the table cap. Playing blind for two or three rounds is genuinely cheap information-gathering: you learn who bets hard and who folds while paying half price.

The side show

A seen player may request a private comparison with the previous seen player. If accepted, both hands are compared privately and the weaker one folds. If declined, play continues. Against one aggressive opponent this ends the hand for a fraction of what a full show costs. Most players forget it exists — a mistake.

Hand rankings, strongest to weakest

  1. Trail / Trio — three of a kind. Three aces is the best hand in the game.
  2. Pure sequence — three consecutive cards, same suit.
  3. Sequence — three consecutive cards, mixed suits.
  4. Colour — three cards of one suit, not consecutive.
  5. Pair — two of the same rank.
  6. High card — nothing above. Ace-high is the best of these.

Note the ordering quirk: a sequence beats a colour, the reverse of poker. A-K-Q is the highest run and A-2-3 is the second highest, which surprises new players constantly.

Strategy that actually holds up

Fold more than feels comfortable. Three cards in four you will hold nothing better than a high card. Playing them is how bankrolls disappear.

Match the table to your balance. Aim for a stack that covers at least twenty boots. Anything thinner and randomness decides your night before skill can.

Vary your pattern. If you only raise on strong hands, attentive opponents fold every time you bet and you never get paid. Occasional blind aggression pays for itself.

Read the timing. Instant calls usually mean a marginal hand; long pauses followed by a raise usually mean the opposite of what the player wants you to think.

Quit while ahead. The most profitable button in any card game is the one that closes it.

Etiquette at private tables

Play at a reasonable pace, do not use chat to needle a losing player, and never share hand information with a friend at the same table — collusion is both detectable and the fastest way to be removed. Family tables run on goodwill; keep the stakes small enough that nobody leaves upset.

FAQs

Is 3Patti luck or skill?

Both. The deal is luck; the betting, folding and table selection are skill. Over one hand luck dominates; over a hundred, decisions show.

Does a sequence beat a colour?

Yes — unlike poker, in 3Patti the run outranks the flush.

What is the highest sequence?

A-K-Q, followed by A-2-3, then K-Q-J downwards.

Can a blind player request a side show?

No. Only seen players can, and only against the previous seen player.

What happens if two hands tie at a show?

The player who paid for the show generally loses the tie, though some tables split the pot. Check the table rules.

Where should a beginner start?

Practice tables, for at least a week, until folding a bad hand becomes automatic.

Conclusion

Learn six hand rankings, understand blind versus seen, remember the side show, and fold ruthlessly — that is genuinely most of 3Patti. The rest is patience and table selection.
